The Current Duo Performance Format:
First section: Seren singing solo vocal by herself on stage whilst she plays fingerpicked trance-like minor on acoustic guitar - usually just one song: ‘Lorelei’, as included in reel. Written from the Siren’s perspective - a dark, trance like song akin to Jeff Buckley’s Lilac Wine, Anne Briggs-esque performance, inspired by Heinrich Heine’s Poem “Lorelei”. This section captures peoples attention and stills the room.
Second section: Seren singing walking blues-inspired, beatnik-like rhythmic and humorous, surprisingly direct, urban and intellectual lyrics accompanied by Mal on acoustic double bass. Most refreshing section audience members describe afterwards with words like “New”, “magic”, or “a Breath of Fresh Air”. Most likely contender for people to laugh, whistle, sing and clap along. Think Tom waits/Regina Spektor.
Third Section: Seren singing soothing, intricately bright, and athletic vocal melodies, with restraint enough to prioritise the storytelling, within classically-written heart-pulling Folk songs, at least one of which is in 3/4 or 6/8, playing deeply-felt improvised Fiddle throughout intros and breaks where needed, accompanied by Mal on Acoustic Guitar with His Bass-expertise providing grounding counter-rhythms on his guitar lines, never neglecting the roots of the songs, interspersed deliberately around Seren’s higher register vocal melodies. Closer perhaps to Anais Mitchell in vocal tone, whistful Storytelling lyrics, and bright guitar here.
Final section: Seren singing solo and playing piano/weighted keys in a larger, sweeping, bolder, more genre-bending and emotionally charged yet dreamy, myth-inspired lyrics, often a few modal keys, with more shifting chords, interesting colours inspired by her love of Bartok and Jazz, with hints of earthy celtic references in vocals. Very full singing range melodically, Seren has 3.5 octave range and uses it here with gusto. These grander ballads are played by Seren on EITHER weighted electric keys/acoustic piano with amplification if Available on stage, and Accompanied by Mal on Acoustic Double bass, one of his main instruments. Closer to Carole King in terms of structure, style and emotional charge on stage.
This is always tailored to and rehearsed uniquely for each venue and performance.
Most sections can have more or less time or songs, small set is 30 mins, 2 sets of 2.5 hours total are current max per unique performance in Duo format.
